JOHN MERCER

My name is John Mercer and I am currently a cosmetologist in Dallas, Texas with over 20 years experience. My favorite part of doing hair, truly is making someone feel good about themselves. I chose cosmetology out of the need to do something after my time in the Army, where my attention to detail and ability to solve problems prepared me for crafting my art in the salon chair. A lot of my friends were stylists, and encouraged me to go to school to pursue my passion.

I love what I do. I eat, breathe, and sleep hair-styling. I owe a lot to my the women in my family for encouraging me at a very young age, to become a hairstylist. My mother would have me color her hair from the age of seven. I would cut my older sister’s barbies hair, and had play-dough people that I could cut. I was raised to be a hairstylist. I specialize in a multitude of cuts, color techniques (Balayage, ombre, flamboyage, babylights, root shading, accent colors, etc.) waxing, and exfoliating. For men, I love classic clipper cuts. I have customized each cutting technique based off of inspiration from visual references, i.e. Pinterest, GQ, Esquire, Details and the like. I absolutely love creative color. Avant garde styles are always my biggest inspiration. Hester Wernt-Rijn, is one of my idols. Her work is breath-taking. I take the ideas I see visually and turn the volume down a notch or two to keep my clients happy. Color is constantly evolving. I see it progressing to multi-tonal shades, vivid hues, which i see becoming more subtle in the next five years.

I love an organic approach to color. Layered bobs are great to play with using shadow and light, to define the shape. most important, is keeping the integrity of the hair healthy. I think the key to success in hair-styling is to stay relevant. I attend classes constantly and most of my vacations were focused solely on traveling to attend Behind the Chair events held yearly. This event shares new techniques, products, and advice about what is relevant to the business of hair. I also believe product education is not just to make money, but to really keep hair in the best possible shape.

I am very selective and I think there is no benefit to invest in your new “do”, without proper effective hair care. Staying relevant is improvement! I have truly found my passion in what I do, and I am happy and grateful to each person who has sat in my chair. Thank you!!
